Amalee (Beaver) Soteriades, 82, of Whitehall, Ohio died on October 15, 2023 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital, surrounded by her family and friends, after a sudden illness. Amalee was born in Hurricane, West Virginia on November 21, 1940. After the death of her father in an industrial accident, when she was only a few months old, her mother moved Amalee and her siblings to London, Ohio. Her mother re-married a kind and gentle man, whom Amalee always remembered as her "dad." His influence stayed with her, as she is remembered by the community as one of the kindest persons you could ever know.  She loved her extended family in Hurricane and visited often. Though she grew up with little material wealth, she remembered a happy childhood of adventures with her older brother and sister, playing in the fields and backyards of her rural small-town. After graduating high school, Amalee started working at Motorists Insurance on East Broad Street in the big city of Columbus, Ohio. She was 17 years-old and took the bus to work on Route 40 every day from London, until she and her sister could afford a small apartment in town. At Motorists, she met attorney Paul J. Haytcher, with whom she would work with for the next 42 years. She followed Mr. Haytcher to his next job as City Attorney, then Mayor, of the City of Whitehall. There, she met the love of her life, a handsome fire fighter, James "Herk" Soteriades. They married in 1967.  After working in City Hall, Amalee again moved on with Mr. Haytcher to a private law practice at 4181 East Main Street in Whitehall. There Mr. Haytcher partnered with attorney Pat Denardo. Amalee said that Mr. Haytcher and Mr. Denardo were as much responsible for the adult she became as her own family. And that person was an absolute joy to know and work with! They sent her to Capital Law School's paralegal training, where she received certifications as a Real Estate Legal Assistant and Legal Assistant in 1974 and 1975 respectively. Later, they formed the HDS Title Company. In 1994, Amalee and "Herk" bought the building at 4181 East Main and named it "The Haytcher and Denardo Law Building," in honor of her mentors. After the pandemic and approaching her 81st birthday, she sold the building in 2021 and retired. Like her beloved "Herk," who sadly passed away in May, 2000, she was a devoted citizen of Whitehall and loved her adopted city. She and "Herk" were avid supporters of the performing arts and public safety education at Whitehall Yearling High School. She would always say "the city is really coming around!" as it rejuvenated in the late 1990s to the present. She was a member of the Whitehall Historical Society, the Lions Club, a frequent presence at City Council and Citizens' Police and Fire meetings, winning the City of Whitehall "Citizen of the Year" award in 2009, and helped induct "Herk" into the Whitehall Hall of Fame. She and "Herk" were longtime members of the Buckeye Sideliner's Club attending home, and away, games with many close friends, including Dick and Madlyn Evans. Amalee and "Herk" attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Columbus' Italian Village, where they organized volunteers and equipment for the Italian Festival's first-aid station. Even after "Herk's" passing, Amalee continued serving in that role, for a total of 35 years.  Amalee is preceded in death by her parents Norris and Elva Lee (nee Chapman) Beaver and beloved stepfather Lewis Leo Stanolis; her sister Loretta N. Beaver and brother Calvin L. Beaver. She is also preceded in death by her closest friends Loretta Ankrom and Judy Hinckley. She is survived by her sister-in-law Cola M. McGruder (James R.); brother-in-law Christopher P. Soteriades; and her beloved nieces and nephews: Michael McCurdy and Connie (Brian) Miller; Constantine "Gus" Soteriades, Nikki (Kerry) Wimsatt, Jamie (Christopher) Barcelona, Paula Jo "PJ" (Jason) Lanhart, and Christopher "Sam" (Megan) Soteriades; as well as many other cherished relatives in the extended Soteriades and Beaver families, along with several friends, including Sue Vargo, Mary Ellen Mouzon, Craig Norman and Andrew Avellano. Calling hours will be Thursday, October 19th at EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E. Livingston Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43227, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a memorial service will be held on Friday, October 20th at EVANS FUNERAL HOME starting at 12:00 noon. Burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery on South High Street (Route 23) immediately following, and a celebration of life meal thereafter.
