Arthur A Hertlein (known as Papa Bear by grandchildren) age 90, of Whitehall, passed away in his home surrounded by family and beloved dog Buck Eye on June 3rd, 2023. Art was born to Arthur and Mary Buttler who preceded him in death along with adopted father John Hertlein and 2 infant siblings. Also preceded in death by wives Dorothy and Vellaire Hertlein, son Paul Randall Hertlein and brother Donald (Anita) Hertlein. Survived by Toni (Steve) Fino, Sharie (Jon Metzger) and guardian angel granddaughter Britney Hertlein. He was survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as Dorothy's children and grandchildren. Art graduated from Holy Rosary High School in 1952 where he played all sports, excelling in football. He served in the Army and worked at North American and Western Electric. He also refereed and umpired high school sports, coached WBBA for many years and became president of the Central Ohio Football Officials Association. He was an usher at The Horseshoe for 50 years and Cooper Stadium. Sports were a huge part of his life, even going to many of his grandchildren's sporting events. His teams were the Buckeyes, Indians and Browns. Art and his family vacationed in Siesta Key and later in Ft Myers Beach where he spent several winters. Art retired on Buckeye Lake where he and Dorothy loved to entertain family and friends with boat and golf cart rides. He will always be remembered for his April Fools' jokes, witty sense of humor and charismatic personality. We are sure he made his way through the pearly gates singing Zippity Doo Dah and dancing all the way!!! Family and friends may gather at Evans Funeral Home, 4171 E Livingston Ave, Columbus, OH 43227, on Thursday, June 8 from 4:00p - 7:00pm. A military ceremony will begin at 6:00pm. A Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 13 at 11:00am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4383 E Broad St, Columbus OH 43213 followed by a lunch at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Capital City Hospice, Franklin County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center and the US Department of Veteran Affairs.
