Obituary

Betty Joy Nilsson, age 83 of Pataskala, Ohio formerly of Minocqua, Wisconsin passed away on May 3, 2022, at her residence with her loving family by her side. Born March 7, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, Betty was the oldest daughter of Richard and Helen (Crawford) Raysa. Upon graduating from George Williams College, Betty became a teacher and coach. Betty had many successful years as a coach guiding and mentoring young female athletes including a 1973 Michigan Girls Basketball Class D Championship. Betty finished a successful career in education and coaching with the Department of Defense Dependent Overseas Education System, retiring in 2005. Betty and her husband Tom eventually built their retirement home in Minocqua, WI to be closer to the family cottage on Clear Lake. She particularly enjoyed spending time at the family cottage during her summer breaks from teaching. Betty was very active in the local Minocqua communities in particular the St Matthias Episcopal Church – Vestry, Community Table, Frederick Place, Survivor's Dinner, the Ski Club and the PEO. Betty loved spending time in the outdoors, coaching and watching her children and grandchildren grow into their adult lives. She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas H. Nilsson. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Cliff) Waters of Vancleave, MS and Helen (Jenny) Nilsson of Pataskala, OH. Betty's two grandchildren: Kristen (Ryan) Wheelock of Biloxi, MS and Gordon (girlfriend Lauren) Waters of Ocean Springs, MS. Betty's two great grandchildren: Nolan and Archie Wheelock. Betty's brother William (Rita) Raysa of Westchester, IL; Betty's sister Mary (Jimi) Raysa of Columbus, OH; one niece JoAnna McGinn; two nephews Joe Raysa and John Raysa and numerous family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Richard Raysa. The family would like to thank Ohio Living Hospice for the support and care that was provided to Betty. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Columbus, OH Humane Society.
