Obituary

Dennis "Denny" Dean Varvel, Sr., 87, of Pickerington, died peacefully on Monday, April 11, 2022, surrounded by his family. Born in Decatur, Illinois on April 12, 1934, he was the son of the late Paul Varvel and Winifred Ferguson (Hagaman).  Denny graduated from Wheaton Community High School in 1952 and went on to serve his country in the National Guard and Air Force. Denny married his beloved wife of 55 years, Sarah "Sally" Miller Varvel, who survives at home, and together they had four children.  Denny retired from Prudential Insurance after a successful 34-year career.  Following his retirement, he became a school bus driver for the city of Reynoldsburg providing nearly 20 years of service. Denny belonged to the congregation of Christ Lutheran Church in Bexley and volunteered for many years with the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts.  Denny was a sports enthusiast and especially loved to watch baseball and football.  As his children grew up, he coached and assisted with youth baseball from little league to high school.  He was a family man and tremendously enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He and Sally spent many summers boating and camping with their children in Mountain Home, Arkansas, and later spent many summers enjoying the coast of Holden Beach, North Carolina with their grandchildren.  Denny created wonderful memories with his family that will last their lifetime.  He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, James (Janet) Rhodes, Louanne Schrader, Michelle (Matt) Selhorst, and Dennis Varvel, II; a brother, Brian (Patty) Ferguson of Los Angeles, California.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Schrader Detwiler, Ashley (Aaron)Blosser, Carl Schrader, Alex Barrett, Matthew (Alecia) Barrett, Andrew Selhorst, Jacob Varvel, and Anthony Selhorst. In addition to his parents, Denny was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Varvel. Friends and family will be received at the EVANS FUNERAL HOME located at 4171 East Livingston Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43227 on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.  A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church 2314 E. Main St. where friends may call 1 hour prior to service with Pastor Tim Iseringhausen officiating.  He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.  A reception will follow at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles located 1623 Brice Rd Reynoldsburg OH.   ​​​In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice. www.evansfuneralhome.net
