Obituary

Haroldean "Deanie" Schmidt, age 89, passed on November 14, 2023, where we are sure she was greeted with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."  Born in Kansas City, MO to Nathan Edmund Rider and Freda White Rider, the family, including brother Pete, moved to Columbus, OH when she was a young girl, and Deanie stayed in Columbus for most of her life. While raising her three young children, Deanie earned her teaching degree from Capital University and spent the next 19 years teaching first grade, mostly in Bremen, OH. At that time, she lived in Hide-A-Way Hills where she was active in the Ladies Bridge Club, and she fed the horses at the HAH barn before school every day. Nearing retirement, Deanie studied to become a realtor and successfully worked as one for many years before finally retiring for good. When she married the Rev. Bill Schmidt in 1982, she helped him in the Lutheran Church, participating in the Ruth Circle and Interfaith Hospitality Network and in many other ways. As Bill was a POW, Deanie traveled extensively across the US with him when he became Commander, met two presidents, and made countless friends while supporting Bill in his work. When they moved to a retirement community in Columbus, Deanie was the friend who made new residents feel welcome, taught computer classes, led the choir, and played bridge.  Deanie was the best mom, and her children survive her: Audrey Lee (Jim Deeds), Theresa Lee-Whiting (Gary Keiser) and Jeff Lee (Monica) along with Bill's children; Fred (Tammy), Jim and Bob Schmidt, Becky Fisher and Mary (Jack) Kovaleski.  Beloved grandchildren include Ian (Sara) Hughey, Zach Lee, Jessica Fisher, Sarah (Jeremy) Kantor, Becky and William Kovaleski, Russell Wagner; and great grandchildren Isaac, Liam, Divya, Roman, Marie, Ghideon and Ava.  She was preceded in death by her brother Pete (Jane) Rider, and his children, Rick Rider, Lisa Spini and Melissa Rider survive her. Services will be on Saturday, November 18 at Faith Lutheran Church, 730 Collingwood Ave., Whitehall, OH with visitation at 9:30 am and service at 10:30 am led by the Rev. Dan Hill. Interment Glen Rest Cemetery.
