James Theodore Mason, 83, of Columbus died Thursday, January 20th at home. He was born to James Clarence Mason and Mary Esther Fahrer in 1937 in Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by former wife, Elaine Mason. He is survived by sister, Priscilla Hewetson (Peter), niece, Hope Hewetson, nephew, Mark Hewetson (former wife Linda) and great nephews Andrew and Ian (Kay) Hewetson and cousins. He graduated from Bexley High School, served in the United States Air Force, attended The Ohio State University, and graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. A fine artist, he worked mainly in bronze and wood and is one of Columbus, Ohio's most high-profile artists. He taught sculpture and inspired many at the Cultural Arts Center for years. Represented by Hammond Harkins Galleries of Columbus, his work is in collections around the city and the United States. In collaboration with Elaine Mason, he created the installation Topiary Garden at the Old Deaf School Park, an outdoor garden inspired by Georges Seurat's painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte." It is one of Columbus' most recognizable public works of art and is a tourist destination. An accomplished musician, James played guitar, banjo and loved to sing. He sang in Ohio Village Singers for over 40 years. The group performed at Ohio History Connection and Ohio Village and also did concert tours throughout Ohio, Russia and Japan. In spite of his many accomplishments, James was humble, down-to-earth and close to family. He loved travel, nature and photography and stayed active with his art into his 80's; painting and sketching whenever possible. A Celebration of Life will take place in late spring at the Topiary Park.
