Judith Ann (McElroy) Dick, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 27th,1937 to Ralph and Marguerite (Markey) McElroy. Judy graduated high school from Holy Rosary in Columbus in 1955. She attended Mt. Carmel College of Nursing and graduated in 1958. Judy was a surgical nurse at Mt. Carmel and St. Ann’s Hospitals in Columbus and then was a nurse at Kings Court Medical Center with Dr. John Paul King for 18 years until she retired in 1985.
Judy married her sweetheart, James Dick of Kenton, Ohio on October 17, 1959. Judy and Jim were members of Holy Spirit Parish for over 60 years. Jim was the love of Judy’s life, along with their six children, eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was happiest spending time with family and friends at home in the solarium or the backyard. She loved riding her bike, hiking in Hocking Hills, wandering at Franklin Park Conservatory, or relaxing at any of her favorite beaches. Judy had the most inviting laugh and smiling brown eyes. She was everyone’s Mom – kind and caring – and she made everyone feel welcome and at home.
Judy loved to travel and was the best companion on her journeys. She treasured her annual “Flo’s Fabulous Fifteen” Lake Erie trips, Cape Cod vacations with her family, Naples and Hilton Head weeks with Jim and friends. One of her favorite excursions was visiting England, Wales, and Ireland to celebrate her Irish heritage of which she was so proud. Slainte! Judy was an avid sports fan, attending the Indianapolis 500 and the US Open in New York. She was most enthusiastic about her Ohio State Buckeyes on Fall Saturdays, and cherished meeting Jack Nicklaus and getting Joe DiMaggio’s autograph on a trip with Jim to New Orleans. Judy loved to read, and she enjoyed the poetry of Mary Oliver, Ann Morrow Lindberg’s “Gift of the Sea”, or a good mystery novel by Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendel, or Louise Penny. She and Jim were generous supporters of PBS and WOSU, enjoying Masterpiece Theater and other PBS series, and the classical music broadcasts on the radio. She had a great appreciation for the Arts, attending musicals at the Palace and Ohio Theaters and spending time at the Columbus Museum of Art.
Judy is survived by Jim, her loving husband of 66 years; children Kate McElroy of Boulder, CO, Eileen Woods of Westerville, Julie (Tim) Freeman of Grandview Heights, Jennifer Dick of Weehawken, NJ, David (Brigitte) Dick of Whitehall; grandchildren Colleen (Jason) Vogel, Eric (Heather) Woods, Jaqueline Woods, Jacob (Lauren) Woods, Aaron Woods, Cassidy Freeman, Sam Freeman, Jack Freeman, Ian Freeman, Cameron Bashore, Parker Bashore; great-grandchildren Whitaker, Reid, and Sawyer Vogel, Axel and Avalyn Bass and Maverick Woods; sisters Joan McElroy and Jeri McElroy, both of Providence, RI. Judy was preceded in death by her son, Michael John Dick; son-in-law, Barry Woods; and her brother, Jim McElroy.
